Do I need my learner’s permit before enrolling in the program?
No. We prepare you for the learner’s permit during the classroom phase of our program. However, we highly recommend having your permit prior to class.
Can I combine weekday and weekend schedules?
No. On Point Trucking Academy will make every effort to work with you, however, we only offer weekday classes Monday - Thursday 7AM - 6PM, Friday 8AM - 1PM at this time. We do not offer weekend classes at this time.
Do I need a Drug Screen and DOT Physical before enrolling?
Yes. These are done prior to your first day of class, and the cost is included in your tuition price.
Do I need to complete an application or pay before enrolling?
Yes. Once you decide to attend, simply visit our office or website to fill out the Enrollment Application to secure your seat, along with your NCDL and payment.
Does a criminal record disqualify me from the program?
No. Regardless of your background, you qualify for the training program if you have a valid NCDL. For job placement, we work with carriers that hire ex-offenders.
If I already have my learner’s permit, can I just take the driving phase of the program?
No. DMV regulations require you to complete a minimum of 160 hours to graduate from our program.
As a female, am I a good candidate for the training?
Yes. Some of our best students are females. One-third of the nation’s drivers are female, and we support job placement for all our students.
How old do I have to be to obtain a CDL License?
You must be at least 18 years old to hold a North Carolina CDL and drive a commercial vehicle within the state. You must be at least 21 to drive across state lines, carry hazardous materials, or transport passengers.
Will I have to be away from home for months at a time as a truck driver? No. On Point Trucking Academy partners with carriers offering local, regional, and long-haul routes. We work with you to find the best career path.
When is payment due? Do you offer a payment plan?
Payment is due at the time of enrollment. You can start with $1,000 down. We accept cash, credit cards, and certified checks. Payment Plans are offered to qualified students.
What if I have never driven a manual transmission?
No problem. Our experienced instructors will teach you. We have over 20 years of experience and hundreds of successful graduates on the road today.
Is On Point Trucking Academy a certified training provider?
Yes. On Point Trucking Academy is a licensed training provider and (on site third-party tester - COMING SOON MARCH 2025) certified by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
Is On Point Trucking Academy a Registered ELDT Provider?
Yes! Our training program adheres to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules for Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). We ensured compliance well before the regulations were implemented.
How Do I Pay for On Point Trucking Academy?
Our admissions team will guide you through the available payment options. If you're paying out-of-pocket, you can use cash, credit, debit, or money order. For those needing financial assistance, we offer various financial aid packages, including in-house financing options.
If you're applying for funding through government programs like the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), please note that it may take a few weeks for approval. In-house financing tends to be processed more quickly.

Why Do I Have to Be 18 Years Old to Apply?
Federal law requires all Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders to be at least 18 years old.
What Type of Driver's License Do I Need to Apply?
To apply for a CDL program at On Point Trucking Academy, you must hold a Class B, C, or D license. A Class D license is a standard driver's license for non-commercial vehicles.
Why Do I Need to Have a Driver's License for at Least a Year?
The more driving experience you have, the safer you'll be on the road.
Why Do I Need a Birth Certificate, Passport, and Social Security Card?
These documents prove your identity and that you are a legal resident or U.S. citizen, which is required for enrollment.
What If I Can't Find My Documents?
If you need help obtaining your documents, here are a few resources:
Birth Certificate: Visit the vital records website of the state where you were born.
Passport: Apply at a U.S. Department of State-approved location, like a post office.
Social Security Card: Visit the Social Security Administration website to request a new card.
If you're a permanent resident, you'll need to show proof of residency and your authorization to work in the U.S.
Why Do I Need to Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident? NORTH CAROLINA requires CDL holders to have "authorized presence" in the U.S., meaning your presence is federally authorized. In NORTH CAROLINA, you'll need to prove citizenship or permanent residency to apply for a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).
Why Do I Need to Speak, Read, and Write English? The FMCSA requires all interstate drivers to communicate in English. While you don't need to be fully fluent, you must be able to interact easily with other drivers and officials. Because of this requirement, all our classes are conducted in English. If you're not confident in your English skills, we recommend taking English courses at a community college or library before enrolling.

Can I Enroll If My License Is Suspended or I Have a Breathalyzer?
If your license is suspended, you cannot legally drive, and therefore cannot enroll in CDL training. Once your license is reinstated, decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. We don't judge, but we must ensure you meet legal requirements.
Breathalyzers (ignition interlocks) prevent vehicle operation unless a breath test is passed. They are installed in vehicles after a DUI conviction, and you cannot enroll in CDL training while dealing with an active DUI case.
What Is Considered an “Acceptable” Driving Record?
Having a speeding ticket doesn’t necessarily disqualify you, but severe or repeated violations can prevent you from obtaining a CLP. Examples of disqualifying violations include:
What Criminal Offenses Will Disqualify Me From Getting a CDL?
Certain crimes, especially those involving vehicles, may prevent you from getting a CDL, including:
Some convictions mean a lifetime ban from CDL eligibility, while others may allow you to appeal or wait for the violation to be removed from your record. We don't make those decisions but will meet with anyone who qualifies for our program.
